Originally known as Private Retreats, then Abercrombie & Kent Destination Clubs, and finally Tanner & Haley, the clubs ran by Rob McGrath would eventually file for bankruptcy in 2006, citing numerous factors that factored into the club's downfall.

According to the club's bankruptcy filing, "Ms. (Holly Felder) Etlin (Tanner & Haley's Chief Restructuring Officer) relates that Complete Retreats, et al.'s financial difficulties stem, in large part, from their 'members-first' approach. 'For instance, [Complete Retreats, et al.] have rarely refused a member's travel request - if a desired property in their portfolio was unavailable, [Complete Retreats, et al.] commonly entered into a costly short-term lease with a third party. In addition, many destination club members received their memberships at a deep discount and/or locked in low annual dues and daily usage fees.'"

"Thus, Ms. Etlin notes, while Complete Retreats, et al., initially experienced rapid growth in their destination club membership base, the costs associated with maintaining their inventory of destination properties, providing their customary level of service, and growing their business in the face of increasingly stiff competition in the market they created have proven to be higher than their current business model can support."

"Moreover, Ms. Etlin continues, Complete Retreats, et al., pursued various seemingly synergistic business and real estate ventures and investments that ultimately proved unsuccessful, exacerbating their financial difficulties."

The creator of the destination club concept had gone from an industry mainstay to bankrupt in just a short few years, leading many to reevaluate their interest in the destination club model.

Ultimate Resort would eventually win the rights to acquire to acquire Tanner & Haley, bringing in over 650 members to their club, now operating as Ultimate Escapes following a merger with the third largest club in the industry, Private Escapes.
