Southridge Club Documents
Planning to limit their total membership base to just 18 ultra-affluent individuals, The Southridge Club was without question one of the most exclusive and elite destination clubs in the history of the sector.
Officially launched in July of 2009, the club offered a different set of property benefits than most destination clubs. Rather than continually adding new residences as new members joined, as is the structure of most destination clubs, The Southridge Club had an established base of three multi-million dollar residences available to members.
All located in the same neighborhood, each of the three properties included a famous background, adding to the exclusivity of the club.
The hallmark property was the Elrod House, a five bedroom, five and one half bath estate located on 20 acres with nearly 9,000 square feet of living space. Designed by John Lautner, the home was designed to be Arthur Elrod's "party home" and incorporated the rugged terrain of Palm Springs into the design. In 1971, the house became a cultural icon as it was featured in the James Bond film Diamonds are Forever.
Across the street was The Boat House, a 4,400 square foot home with five bedrooms and five and one half baths. The property's master bedroom featured a special skylight that would allow members the ability to sleep under the stars at their discretion.
Next door to the Elrod House was the Steve McQueen House. Spanning 4,300 square feet, the four bedroom, five bath home still had the original furniture that Steve McQueen relaxed in for members to enjoy.
Soon after the club's July 2009 launch, the first member would join, a US based billionaire. As the clu began to ramp up their marketing and sales efforts, the unnamed owner of the three properties elected to no longer pursue the club concept. Instead, he would look to sell the famed properties.
According to a club representative, the club's inaugural member was "more than fairly" compensated for the Southridge Club closure.
Despite the owner's decision to move in another direction, the executives behind the club are considering the creation of a similar concept in Europe, with a focus on residences that appeal to an American audience.
