Phoenix Club Holiday Access
A spin on the more traditional destination club model, The Phoenix Club closely resembles a vacation rental club.
Created by "a small group of High Country Club members and creditors," the club would be first introduced to their potential clients in August of 2009.
Earlier in the year, High Country Club, once one of the fastest growing destination clubs in the history of the sector, had filed for bankruptcy. When the economy began to soften in 2008, interest in the destination club industry took a significant hit. Coupled with the club's insufficient annual dues structure, increases in executive compensation, and an inability to secure credit crippled the club, leaving 375 members without a club.
The Phoenix Club would be introduced as a "reconstituted" High Country Club. Rather than charging an up front membership deposit and ongoing annual dues, members would pay a variable per week cost to access the club's properties.
For more desirable periods, such as Christmas and New Years, members would pay a premium on property reservations compared to other less accessed travel periods.
Each of the club's planned 27 residences has a schedule of dates with accompanying prices per week of travel. The time period with the highest associated costs was the middle of December through the beginning of January.
The Phoenix Club would contact their potential members in September of 2009 with further details about the club's structure including:
- Members will decide upon the actual reservation system once a critical mass is reached.
- Any number of weeks of reservations will be accepted, but four weeks will likely be required to maintain membership status.
- All reservations will be from Saturday to Saturday.
- Weekends will be available on a space available basis at "very good rates."
- Plans are to allow members the ability to reserve properties up to two years in advance, but the final reservation system will likely be determined by a membership committee.
- Pricing and/or a lottery system may be used for peak period holiday access.
This pricing and/or lottery system has yet to be fully described to members, but please check back frequently to learn more about The Phoenix Club and their reservation structure.
