An abbreviation for Real Estate Investment Trust. By definition, a REIT is a company that owns, and in most cases, operates income-producing real estate. A REIT must distribute at least 90% of its taxable income to its shareholders each year in the form of dividends and must invest at least 75% of its total assets in real estate.
